Cronos: The New Dawn unfolds a strategic depth and intransigence that is the combination of 4X grand strategy and tactical combat. The game is set in a universe that persists, where players are in charge of conquering territories. The main theme of the gameplay is the conflict of resource management on one side and the construction of big capital ships on the other. Resources are mined from the celestial bodies under the player’s control. The products of the mines are the resources to be used in the construction of ships, and planets are the places where the resources are mined.
The logistics of these operations are very complex and take a lot of time. Contrary to most RTS games, the players here cannot act quickly, and the manner of their actions is heavy; doing a real-time move of a fleet in a solar system is time-consuming, and that is why it is a constant, ever-present game of deception, spying, and risking your precious military forces on a battle that cannot be immediately reversed.
The game is unique from others in its flagship and fleet combat, where doctrines are not the deciding factors. Still, your ship gets victory by the thorough designing of the specific hardpoints, weapon arcs, and subsystem targets for your capital ship. You do this by direct control of movements in tactical, pause-able battles that give the feeling of a brutal chess game of placement, interactions with shields, and aiming at the enemy’s propellers or weapons.
Thus, every battle becomes a negative game of death and possession, since a lost flagship, which was put together during the weeks of harvesting, is lost forever; hence, every war is a risk to the political scene, as the complete server is changed dramatically. This is a title that is about practising patience, thinking of long-term effects and using the art of diplomacy, bringing to players an experience of space warfare that is not very intense and click-heavy, but rather the cold, calculated execution of a grand strategy.
