Hive Blight is a roguelite, auto-battle, squad-building game in which each playthrough is unique. You are the leader of a band of insect soldiers battling a rampaging fungal disease that is infecting the kingdom. Each trip, you start off with clans that dictate your units, abilities and game style. Thus, all the decisions lead to future battles and to new tactical possibilities. In addition, each species has specific skills, and effective teaming is the secret to survival in more and more challenging situations.

In the meantime, the battles are a lot about positioning and synergy and not just numbers. Before you start fighting, you set your insect team and get ready for the battle to come. After the battle begins, units will attack automatically, and strategy and preparation will determine the results. Also, there is powerful equipment, trinkets and upgrades to boost your squad and make it more powerful as the game goes on. This means that swapping clan pairings and units also keeps the gameplay fresh and can stimulate creative gameplay.
