Hollow Knight: Silksong extends the adored Metroidvania basics of its predecessor to a stunningly fluid and acrobatic performance of death, which was completely rebuilt around the new features of its new character, Hornet. Her amazing speed, agility, and the main game mechanic of making tools on the spot using resources gathered from nature define the gameplay. Contrary to the Knight’s slow and careful combat, Hornet’s movement is pleasing to the ears and eye; she can embark on her patented Silkline to the highest point, jump among enemies with a quick, sharp needle attack, and continue hitting without stopping to create an unending offensive flow.
The world of Pharloom is a vertically stunning yet challenging work of art; her mobility is required to climb through heavy, coral-rich citadels and dark, moss-covered towers. Fight is a dance of strategy where you get a reward in silk for a perfect parry, which is used to heal but also to give off “Silkbind” powers and to make traps, thus every foe encounter is turned into a very stylish and accurate performance of resourcefulness.
This changes the discovery from a careful journey to an exciting, risky parkour, which guarantees an experience that is both familiar and new at the same time – a game in which one does not merely explore a fallen kingdom but rapidly, gracefully and lethally take possession of it.
