Over The Top: WWI game removes all the romantic elements of war and focuses on a terrifying and atmospheric trench survival adventure. It is you who is the commander of a small group of soldiers making their way to the brutal and dirty battlefield of the Western Front. The gameplay is a mixture of stealth, strategy, and survival as you aim to save yourself. You are a junior officer who is responsible for finding your way through the historical labyrinthine trench networks, no man’s land craters, and ruined villages that were witness to one of the most destructive wars in history. The main idea is a nerve-wracking cycle of planning, reconnaissance, and implementation; you have to thoroughly check enemy positions using periscopes and observation posts, give your squad only scarce ammunition, food, and medical kits, and finally lead them in carrying out night raids or during an artillery bombardment.

A “Stress” system symbolises the psychological state of a soldier; continuous bombardment, seeing dead comrades and being constantly under the threat of death may cause shell shock, mutiny, or complete breakdown, which is why you will have to massively rotate your troops and keep up their morale at least as much as you keep ammunition. Combat is harsh and merciless; a sniper’s shot may kill a soldier whom you have been at the very least with for hours, while bayonet charges are wild, desperate matters in which only positioning and surprise count, while marksmanship does not.
