In Skoof Simulator, players control a shy, balloon-like forest creature, a Skoof, moving through a strangely hostile and playful nature where the player’s survival depends on mastering physical movements and secret smells. The main gameplay focuses on “scent-crafting”, the players roll over bioluminescent moss patches, fermented berry piles, and predator musk to create new scent auras that either help to call mate-Skoofs, scare off burrowing Grumblegrubs, or disguise your scent from the razor-beaked Plinkhawk. Movement is all about momentum: you actually breathe in and out the swamp air to make your soft body swell and shrink, so that you can bounce on the water lilies, slip through the root tunnels, or fly up gentle breezes near the cliffs.

The environment looks like a hand-painted diorama, called the Drizzlewood Basin, where the time is divided into mini-seasons (Dewfall, Sporeburst, Crispflutter, and Gloomhush), each changing the slipperiness of the ground, the rate of food decay, and the manner in which predators move around. The “hoard-huddle” system is very important since you find and roll up three stolen shinies (lost buttons, bottle caps, glowing pebbles) back to your nest by evening, but each shiny puts extra weight and scent on you, so you become slow and more visible.

There is also a multiplayer mode called “Skoofle Royale, ” where twelve Skoofs are thrown together in a dwindling meadow, and you become temporarily bonded in a gang making a “Skoofstack, ” which is sharing the scent cover at the cost of individual control. As permadeath is substituted by “startle-respawn” (you pop and reform at the last sleep-moss patch, losing only un-nested shinies), each game session is a mix of silly bouncing and real danger, making Skoof Simulator a wild, scent-based physics sandbox of running away, getting food, and flatulent evasion.
