Call of Duty Black Ops 1 was a game that was fast-paced and cinematic in nature, but what really set it apart was how it intricately weaved a complicated, non-linear narrative involving conspiracy and psychological betrayal against the Cold War backdrop. The gameplay perfectly transitions between an all-out anarchic battle in the likes of the Bay of Pigs and Vietnam, to stealth and tension-filled missions that revolve around assassinations and prisoner escapes. At the same time, the series’ trademark tight controls and impactful weapon feedback are kept intact. The campaign is made up of extremely tense interrogation scenes in which you, playing as protagonist Alex Mason, have the story being unveiled through his disoriented memories; thus, the player is handed the role of the one who has to put the pieces of the truth together. Such narrative complexity was also accompanied by a revolutionary multiplayer that brought about the legendary “Create-a-Class 2.0” system, thereby, giving the players an unheard of level of control over their loadouts with the ability to customize perks, use wildcard slots, and attachments for weapons, at the same time, the co-op “Zombies” mode was turning into a rich, Easter egg-filled experience with the very famous “Kino der Toten,” thus, establishing a formula consisting of the three pillars of Campaign, Multiplayer, and Zombies which provided great variety and replayability at an incomparable level.
