Game Overview
By ditching the clean, dull European front for the brutal, intimate fights of the Pacific and the Eastern Front, Call of Duty: World at War gruesomely changed the franchise and basically set a darker tone for the series, which has been around ever since. The gameplay is very tough, and it is a fight against a very smart and tricky enemy that is rarely defeated. Japanese soldiers hiding in spider holes suddenly burst out, and thus you are attacked by a bunch of soldiers with bayonets, and so you have to be very careful with your flanks and the ground. These sorts of terrifying yet tactical scenes are made possible by the introduction of the flamethrower. This very powerful weapon can be used to both clear defensive bunkers and set fire to the environment.
The first-person perspective of a battle-hardened veteran sets the tone for the gripping and brutal stories that make up the campaign, which is also supported by the visceral moments, such as when you operate the machine gun of a PT boat during a naval battle which is very confusing and crazy or when you survive the not-ending and very violent German counter-attacks while the storming of the Reichstag is going on.
The game’s raw and brutal combat style philosophy is also apparent in the very famous Nazi Zombies mode of the game, a cooperative survival experience that was initially an easter egg only, but then became a cultural phenomenon, where players’ stamina is put to test as they fight against the infinite and never-ending hordes of the undead in a small and cramped bunker that nicely sums up the game’s brutal focus on the struggle for survival against an overpowering and very scary enemy.
