REANIMAL brings back cooperative horror in a brutally intense, physics-based nightmare setting where you and at most three friends are in control of deformed, cult-created monsters scrambling for survival in a pseudorandomly generated, Lovecraftian underworld. Playing is a frantic struggle to stay alive through squad-based strategy and terror that arises naturally; every player chooses a different mutant, from a massive, behemoth-like one that can break through barricades to a stealthy stalker that can get through vents, with special, upgradable powers like imploding enemies with sonic screeches, camouflaging in the chameleon way to avoid detection, or impaling enemies with barbed tails, so that players have to work together by matching their hideous powers. The basic gameplay cycle is a scavenging expedition in the unfathomable, cramped, and eternally shifting tunnels of the abyss where you need to handle the scarcity of burning things for light, get flesh to heal yourself, and figure out how to get through a locked door or remove a rock by joining your monster powers, one holding the gate down while the other one dashing through squeezes the passageway, all the time the dark spawning psychological manifestations that are different for each of your team’s combinations. The game’s hallmark “Fear Echo” mechanism unconsciously warps the environment based on your combined actions: making too much noise attracts even more, older monsters, and being in the dark for a long time causes events that deplete your sanity, which only certain mutations can stop. Advancement is connected with discovering the cult’s experiments through the lore that you come across and overcoming “Genesis Rifts”, hard, almost boss fights where the abyss physically reshapes the arenas where you are, thus requiring you to adjust your strategies immediately. This tripartite blend of squad-based tactics, arising horror, and thorough creature customization results in an extremely replayable cooperative experience where survival is only partly about weaponry; it mainly depends on the extraordinary, mutual connection that your monstrous pack has.
