Game Overview
WWF SmackDown provided a wildly arcade wrestling experience that was chaotic, yet perfectly captured the Attitude Era’s rebellious spirit. SmackDown! was unlike slower, sim-style wrestling games, but it favored a more rapid, combo-heavy brawling style with exaggerated animations. Of course, those Irish whips kept sending opponents flying across the ring, and steel chair hits generated stars in a cartoonish way. Finishing moves such as The Rock’s People’s Elbow or Kane’s Chokeslam were the most spectacular because the camera zoomed in for the maximum effect. The game’s reversal system, based on momentum, rewarded timing over complicated inputs; thus, players could easily counter a move with a well-timed button press, resulting in continuous and dynamic battles that resembled drama on WWE TV.
The backstage areas were not only filled with interactive elements like stop signs and soda machines, but those places also became play areas for hardcore matches. The “SmackDown Mall” allowed players to download unusual outfits (e.g., Undertaker in a Hawaiian shirt). The game’s janky physics and limited roster may not meet today’s standards. Still, the game’s lively energy, the season mode that was full of WWE’s soap-opera storylines, and the four-player couch chaos are what made it a defining wrestling title of its era.
