Game Overview
FIFA 22 significantly improves how the game is played on the pitch by introducing HyperMotion Technology, available only on next-generation consoles, which uses advanced 11v11 match capture to animate more than 4,000 new realistic football moves. The core of the gameplay is smooth, situation-appropriate ball control—players can now trap, turn, and dribble with real inertia and correct body positioning, making it more skill-based and easier to hold possession in tight spaces.
The new Explosive Sprint feature distinguishes controlled acceleration from pure speed, letting quick dribblers break past defenders in tight areas, and defensive movement has improved with more responsive side-to-side actions. The passing and shooting systems have been updated with a new Composed Finishing system, in which the player's balance determines shot accuracy, shot angle, and the pressure exerted by nearby defenders, leading to a greater variety of goal types, including first-time volleys and curled outside-foot shots.
On the defensive side, FIFA 22 features a major overhaul of its Tactical A.I., which greatly enhances teammates' positioning and their decisions when the ball is not in play; defenders now show smarter zonal marking by tracking runners into the channels and cutting off passing lanes all without any input from the player, and the fullbacks automatically move into a back-three position during attacking transitions to prevent counter-attacks. The Active Touch System gives defenders more realistic interception animations, so they can stretch, deflect, or trap loose balls using natural limb movements.
The struggle in the midfield is increased by a new Pressure System that more accurately measures stamina loss—when using high-pressure tactics, players now tire exponentially, forcing managers to choose between aggressive play and maintaining a solid defensive shape. The set pieces have been redesigned with a tactical free-kick system which lets players call up multiple runners, feign shots and carry out training-ground routines.
After the 90-minute game, FIFA 22 offers layered progression across several modes. Career Mode returns with a dynamic player development system in which attribute improvements are determined by a player's form, match ratings, and position-specific training exercises, along with an interactive transfer negotiation system that includes realistic agent demands and release clauses. VOLTA Football now offers a more street-style football experience with custom arenas, special abilities (such as trickster flicks or power shots), and cross-play between the street and the stadium through a single progression system.
FIFA Ultimate Team (FUT) continues to be the main mode, including Division Rivals, Weekend League, and Squad Building Challenges, all of which have now been enhanced by the introduction of FUT Heroes—legendary players associated with particular club rivalries who gain chemistry bonuses due to their historical links. The ultimate aim is to build a dynasty across all modes, mastering the hyper-realistic physics engine, outwitting opponents tactically, and earning fame from Sunday league matches all the way to the Champions League final.
